The Kenyan government has launched consultations with industry players for a major regional fiber optic infrastructure project that will connect northeastern Kenya with both Somalia and Ethiopia, this is part of a broader push to expand digital access and integration across the Horn of Africa. This new project is already being implemented by Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications, Digital Economy and the ICT Authority under the Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project (HoAGDP), which is a World Bank funded new initiative aimed at transforming trade and digital connectivity in the Horn of Africa region. The proposed plan is centered by a 740-kilometre fiber optic internet link running between the counties Isiolo to Mandera that shares borders with both countries, Somalia and Ethiopia.
The project also includes 200 kilometers of cable installations to provide access to public institutions such as schools, hospitals, markets, and administrative offices. This project is designed to serve all underserved Northeastern counties and Meru county. Tis move is aimed at improving economic growth, service delivery, and cross-border digital business. This project is part of the broader Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project with Expression of Interest – Early Market Engagement. Somalia has joined the East African Community some years back, which makes the Country easily reconnect with Kenya and the other East African countries. Somalia would be one of the best partners if not hindered by the terrorist groups, which the Somali Government has been fighting over the years as its supported by the African peace keeping forces and international Community members.
