The Former Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde has been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 11th annual Forbes Woman Africa Leading Women Summit, held at the Sandton Convention Centre.

The recognition highlights her historic role as Ethiopia’s first female president and her decades-long career in diplomacy, peacebuilding, and advocacy for women’s leadership across the continent. The award was presented alongside activities marking International Women’s Day.

According to summit organizers, the honor adds to a series of international recognitions received by Sahle-Work, including the Trailblazer Award at the Women Political Leaders Summit in Brussels in 2023. She has also been featured on Forbes’ list of the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women, where she was ranked among the top global figures.

In remarks following the ceremony, Sahle-Work emphasized the importance of women-led progress in addressing gender inequality, noting that women must play a central role in driving change despite longstanding challenges.

She also expressed support for strengthening legal frameworks to ensure women’s participation in economic activities, describing legislation as a key tool to translate gender equality commitments into practice.

During her presidency, which began in 2018, Sahle-Work was widely recognized for prioritizing women’s empowerment and peacebuilding initiatives. She also launched leadership development programs aimed at supporting women from diverse backgrounds across Ethiopia.

Her career spans senior diplomatic roles, including ambassadorial posts and positions within the United Nations system, culminating in her tenure as head of state. Observers say her leadership continues to serve as an inspiration for women across Africa. This is considered a well deserved sword to this Noble leader.
